Grooveshark !

Nice interface, shareable uploaded mp3 indexed in the search engine,
many many many available titles, exportable playlist in embeded players.
Grooveshark is really awesome.

With the last version of Deezer (so-called V3), Deezer has fixed several lacks.

  • First of them, a mp3 title is no longer downloaded as a Flash file in the temporary directory. This was a major default as flash could be easily converted into a mp3 file using, for example ffmpeg. The mp3 file is now downloaded in several parts of 4 kbytes, but it can not easily reconstitued as these files seem are not raw mp3 (perhaps these files have a header part which has to be removed, or perhaps files are crypted, I don't care anyway).
  • Second, uploaded mp3 can now really be listened only by the owner, even in a exportable player. Obviously, It wasn't the case in the previous version. Of course, this evolution was necessarly. As a matter of fact, the site and many others have no reason to continue to exist!
Moreover, the new exportable player have major limitations: playlist is played in random mode, and controls on played song have disappeared !

Finally, the current version of Deezer is not only ugly, it has less possibilities addressing the communauty, and the interface is full of bugs too ! Deezer can always play your downloaded mp3 but the application devoted to upload mp3 is not available ... Probably, under the pressure of major companies, Deezer has released a beta version.

For all these reasons, Deezer is no so much attractive as in the past. Since several months Deezer has a serious concurrent: Spotify. Some people on the net say that it is a Deezer killer. Indeed: Spotify makes use of a peer-to-peer technology: music files may be distributed on several serveurs decreasing dramatically the latence and the serveurs load. Spotify uses a specific application instead of a web interface: on a linux computer the difference is huge: as firefox running Deezer uses 30% of one of my CPU (on a macbook pro 3) Spotify and Wine use respectively 6% and 4% of my CPU. Spotify scrobbles songs play on lastfm account and you can benefit the lastfm communauty tools which are better than Deezer...

So, as you understand, I left Deezer for Spotify... but I hope Deezer will propose a real and novatrice solution, that it is not currently the case with this V3.
